Step Up 2019

Launched in early 2019, Cameco welcomed TSN Radio's Michael Landsberg to help announce its new community mental health project called Step Up For Mental Health.

In 2019, the Step Up for Mental Health event was introduced – powered by Cameco in partnership with Brainsport. The inaugural event, scheduled for May 11, 2019, featured two components:

  • A 5K/10K run/walk through Saskatoon’s scenic river valley with live bands, unprecedented course atmosphere and a post-run concert at the Delta Bessborough Gardens.
  • An evening of inspiration featuring musicians and celebrities, hosted by #SickNotWeak founder and TSN broadcaster, Michael Landsberg.

Every dollar of entry fees, plus a matching amount from Cameco, supported the Cameco Fund for Mental Health established through the Saskatoon Community Foundation. These funds would be disbursed annually to organizations undertaking projects that promote or protect mental health.

The inaugural Step Up For Mental Health event was a huge success as two thousand runners/walkers hit the streets of Saskatoon on May 11. The event raised $400,000 for the Cameco Fund for Mental Health which awarded grants to 21 projects benefitting 12 different Saskatchewan communities. The projects ranged in scope from education and training, to direct support for people struggling with mental health and addictions.

“Mental health touches all of us,” says Cameco CEO Tim Gitzel. “It affects us personally, through our families, through our co-workers and through our neighbours. It’s indiscriminate and it’s pervasive. “Through this grant program, we’re pleased to support the organizations working hard to achieve positive mental health outcomes in our communities.”
